The Benefits of Origami for Children
Japan has many arts cultural, such
as origami, aikido, and ikebana. Aikido is the
self-defense art and ikebana is the art of arranging the flower. In this
paper will be discussed about origami, especially the benefits of origami
for children.
Origami is derived from
Japanese Language. Combination from the word Ori, means fold, and
gami means paper. According to Maya Hirai, the founder of Indonesian Origami
Studio, origami is defined as an art of changing a piece of paper become
a unique shape which is the miniature of nature. By folding the paper, can
create many shape and form of things, such as animal (fish, frog, turtle,
rabbit, dinosaurus, and bird), flower, ship, hat, bowl, building, house, and
the other toys. Origami can be done while the leisure time and no need
the expensive things, just a trace paper.
In
Indonesia, origami has been practiced in every play group because origami
is the one of fun

Beside the activity, most of origami models are liked by the children because shaped as a miniature or representation of the goods. Actually, origami is not only a fun lesson, but also has many benefits for the growth of children. It activates the brain, soft motorist and increase children’s creativity. This is stated by Maya Hirai, origami is not only folding and changing a piece of paper or more become a shape of things which are useful, but also give a lesson about creativity, persistence, thoroughness, imagination and beauty. She stated again the benefits of origami for children, as like follow:

specialist, Professor Kawashima Ryuta has demonstrated that by doing origami,
an amount of blood flow in the frontal of cerebrum can be increased. This helps
the brain to perform better.

Beside that, origami as well as children’s
means of play which is safe, cheap, fun and rich of benefits.

Trough origami, kids try to make their own toys.
It can make a satisfaction for children because they do not need to buy the
toys and just make it by their selves.

The process of forming something in origami
needs the steps, and of course, it trains children to be persevering, patient
and discipline to finish the origami and get the shape that they want.

Trough origami, the children are also taught to
create something, work and establish a model. Therefore, origami can help
the children in enlarging their imagination with the created shape of origami.

When kids work out to create something by their hands,
certainly they will feel proud and satisfy. For more, they learn to respect and
appreciate the creation trough origami.

The other benefit is kids can learn to read diagrams/pictures,
think mathematically as well as comparison trough the created shapes of origami.
Beside
of the benefits above, making origami also trains the children to
communicate, reveal what they think, and give a pleasure time with their
parent. For instance, children can ask their parent if they find any
difficulties in forming the paper.
In conclusion, origami is one of medium for improving children’s
creativity and increasing their brain performance. From a piece of paper, a
game of folding paper, children can get many benefits from origami.
